ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY POLICY


Miami Regional University is committed to community and academic excellence through honesty, trust, and mutual respect. Academic and professional integrity are core student responsibilities that encompass both the honest individual pursuit of knowledge and accountability for one's actions in achieving academic and professional objectives. Students are expected to act ethically in the pursuit of learning and avoid the types of behaviors that impair the effective assessment of learning through grades or other processes designed to evaluate successful learning. Moreover, students are expected to behave as outstanding professionals in their fields.

When faculty, students, and staff come to Miami Regional University, they join a community founded on searching forknowledge and excellence in their endeavors. At the heart of that search is personal honesty that makes possible an open and vibrant exchange of ideas. The intellectual health of the community depends on this honesty and sustains itself through the trust and mutual respect of each of its members.

Integrity is at the heart of the university's commitment to academic and professional excellence.The university community enforces clear standards of integrity so that undergraduate and graduate students can internalize those standards and carry them forward in their personal and professional lives. Living life with integrity prepares students to assume leadership roles in their communities and their chosen professions. University alumni can be proud of their education; society will benefit from the University's contribution to the development of ethical leaders.

Violations of academic integrity and professional behavior demean the violator, degrade thelearning process, deflate the meaning of grades, discredit past and present students' accomplishments, and tarnish the University's reputation for all its members.

Miami Regional University expects that every student will behave with integrity and avoid academic and professional misconduct. This policy applies to all university faculty,staff, and students admitted into any department or program, including conditional or probationary admittance. This policy does not list every conceivable way in which an academic or professional integrity violation may occur. Changes in technology, the ease of access to information, and even the ability to collaborate across multiple forums have dramatically increased the ways in which individuals can engage in academic and professional misconduct or assist others in doing the same. Therefore, this policy details by general category the prohibited activities regardless of the means or way the conduct is carried out. These are not meant to be exclusive lists of every behavior that could fall within the definition of academic dishonesty or integrity violations. All integrity violations are prohibited and are subject to discipline. This policy provides a due process resolution for students' alleged violations.

Students are responsible for being aware of the University’s Academic and Professional Integrity Policy and always engaging in honest, ethical, and professional behavior. Such behavior includes but is not limited to:

  • Following the Miami Regional University Academic and Professional Integrity Policy

  • Following the instructor's rules and processes related to academic integrity as directed in the course syllabus and related course documents

  • Asking the instructor for any necessary clarification if the standards of academic performance in a timely manner

  • Asking the instructor for any necessary clarification of the syllabus, assignments, or grading policies in a timely manner

  • Helping foster campus, clinical, and work environments where academic and professional integrity is expected andrespected

  • Helping foster a classroom environment in which each student is treated with courtesyand respect

  • Acting in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in all academic and professional endeavors

  • Refraining from aiding another person in a violation of academic or professional integrity, or contributing to any such violation
